94 GHz BGA400 socket boasts 12 W power dissipation

September 4, 2025 By Aimee Kalnoskas Leave a Comment

Ironwood Electronics has recently introduced a new BGA socket design using high performance elastomer capable of 94 GHz bandwidth, very low inductance and wide temperature applications. The new GT-BGA socket is specifically designed for BGA400 package configurations and operates at bandwidths up to 94GHz with less than 1dB of insertion loss while supporting enhanced power dissipation capabilities of up to 12 watts. The socket is designed with aluminum components for heat dissipation and can be customized with fins and axial flow fan for further power dissipation, making it ideal for high-performance applications requiring both exceptional signal integrity and thermal management. The contact resistance is typically 30 milliohms per pin, ensuring reliable electrical performance across all connections.

The socket is mounted on the target PCB with no soldering, and uses very small real estate allowing capacitors/resistors to be placed close by. Other passive components can be placed on the back side of PCB by creating custom cutouts in the stiffener plate, maximizing board utilization efficiency. The socket is constructed with swivel lid which allows a quick insertion method so that IC’s can be changed out quickly, streamlining prototyping and testing workflows. This innovative socket solution addresses the growing demand for high-frequency, high-power semiconductor testing and prototyping applications where traditional soldered connections would be impractical or impossible to implement.
