Intel IDF2014: Sensing the Internet of Things

At the Intel IDF2014 technical conference for makers, developers, and creators held in San Francisco last week, you got the sense that analog is the new revolution in digital. From the Internet of Things to wearable computing to smart consumer products, sensors play a rapidly growing role in those billions of connected devices acquiring, transmitting, and analyzing data — Big Data. Intel’s CEO Brian Krzanich emphasized that role in his keynote when he elaborated on the company’s roadmap of SoCs.  These chips, he said, will enable developers to build products that have visual, audio, and environmental sensing capabilities in a compact, power-efficient device.

Today’s and tomorrow’s examples of those devices and the processors that power them were on “hands-on” display at this year’s conference with a question irresistible to the 4,500 naturally inquisitive attendees…

SMS Audio BioSport In-ear Headphones integrate biometric sensors in a custom heart rate monitor. No battery or additional power source is needed to charge the product because it harvests energy directly from the audio microphone.
